Machiavelli in Brussels is about winning one`s interest in the European Union, in short "Brussels". Countless interest groups from governments to civil societies try to get the "honey and money" of desired EU legislation, subsidies and more. Drawing on research and evidence, the author describes how they "push the buttons of Brussels" in daily practice and how they can improve their effectiveness. Recalling Machiavelli, Van Schendelen reiterates the three catchwords of success: ambition, study and prudence. Behind all three are methods to follow (also applicable in lobby settings elsewhere).
The book cites many real cases, smart practices and special issues of EU lobbying, as well as the limits of lobbying and its contribution to democracy.
