The main problem with constructing a blue laser was the lack of supply of single crystals of Gallium nitride (GaN). This problem, in fact, became an opportunity for us. At our Institute we could generate the high pressure and temperatures needed to make synthetic diamonds. Therefore, it was easier for us than others to make GaN. After over 10 years research, we succeeded in divising the technological process for making single crystals of the semiconductor, with crystalline equality by far exeeding that achieved in others laboratories around the world. This extremely important result formed the foundation for developing in Poland the technology for making blue lasers - saying prof. Myths and reality
Poles entered the EU with a mixture of hopes and anxieties, not sure of what would happen after 1 May 2004. On the one hand, they hoped for the acceleration of the economic development and drop of unemployment rate (which reached 20% in 2002), on the other, they were afraid of the rise of prices and thus the worsening of living standards. Such worries began to increase dramatically in the course of the last few months before the referendum. At the beginning of 1990s, the countries that Poles feared most included Germany (88%), 25% pointed to the Soviet Union. Other countries did not raise any serious concern. After fifteen years, the situation has reversed. In a survey of November 2005 as many as 67% of respondents saw Russia as the greatest threat, while only 21% pointed to Germany.
